Ho Chi Min City, in Vietnam, is a fascinating destination for travellers to Southeast Asia, thanks to its huge link with France, which has left it with a past full of history, food specialities and an ever-present French influence. The first thing we notice in Ho Chi Min City is its link with France, because it was once an important trading center for the French in Southeast Asia. After that, the Vietnamese and the French met with a terrible conflict, and the French eventually left the country, by leaving a significant influence behind them. Today, if you're interesting in History, you can visit lots of museums and monuments documenting this country’s long – and often bloody – history. Secondly, this city is interesting in terms of gastronomy, because the French influence is also found in food. Some cafés serve French-style bread and pastries in Ho Chi Min City, for example the café “Tous les Jours” or “Pat a Chou”. Moreover, some expensive hotels and restaurants serve French food to their customers. The food is a good heritage, because the French pastries are very good and it brings a very positive point to this Vietnamese destination. And to top it all off, the influence of French culture can still be felt. Firstly, many of the buildings in the city are built in French style, so it contrasts with the image of the Asian cities we imagine. Secondly, many people, especially the older generations, learned French in school and still can speak it very well. To summarize, if you’re looking for a unique city to visit in Southeast Asia, Ho Chi Min City is an attractive choice, where you can find a French spirit everywhere in the atmosphere of the city.
